bike suppliesIt’s important to wipe down your bike and bike accessories every other week during the summer and every week during the wet season. Run a moist rag along the frame, removing particles and dirt, and do the same to the chain after you’ve added some lube to it. The chain is the heart of your bike, and a dirty heart means a heart attack. It’s also a good idea to take a flat head screwdriver and hold it against the sprockets of the derailleur while turning the crank. The screwdriver will gather the muck and dirt that gets caught in your sprockets, which affect your ride.

You will notice the difference when you ride a clean bike. It puts the fun back into riding. You don’t have to pump quite as hard and when you coast down the hill, you really coast.

It’s also important to keep your tires hard. During the summer, tires tend to lose air more quickly thanks to the heat, so try giving them a squeeze to see if they could use a pump. That will also make your ride smoother and faster.

As far as self maintenance without any serious bike supplies, that’s all you need to know. To get into brake-tightening and more sophisticated bike maintenance, you need some bike accessories.

Biking Safely With Music

Posted by DanielA in BikeAhead - (Comments Off)

bike accessoriesBiking with headphones can be very motivational, especially when you hit a big hill and you’re listening to Guns ‘N’ Roses’ “Night Train.” But if you do a lot of inner city biking, it’s dangerous to listen to music, especially loudly. Now I know you kids are going to do what you want regardless of what I say, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take heed. No running red lights, unless you want to get hit.

Now, that word of caution said, it’s important that if you’re going to listen to music you keep your iPod in a safe place like your bike supplies bag, so that if you fall off your bike, goodness forbid, you don’t destroy it also. Keep the headphone wires out of your way, and if you’re going to change the song and you don’t have the headphones that allow you to do so, stop, dismount and figure out what you’re going to listen to. Adjusting your iPod while biking is almost as bad as answering the phone while riding.

You can always wear those bike accessories that sit on your forearm too.

Play music that will energize you and allow you to do your best and pedal your fastest, especially when training, but above all, be safe!

Bike Supplies, Water and Play

Posted by DanielA in BikeAhead - (Comments Off)

bike accessoriesBike supplies change the way we think about our bikes. When we have new bike supplies, it’s like a new toy, you want to play with it and test it out and in this case that means more time spent biking.

Spring and summer are the best seasons to buy bike supplies because you don’t have to be afraid to try them out in inclement weather. But if you’re going to try your new Kurt Kinetic Road Machine in the late-July heat, make sure to stay hydrated. In fact, you may even want to purchase a water bottle holder, so that you don’t get dehydrated on your ride, and yes that counts as bike supplies.

Heat stroke ain’t a joke. If you don’t want a water bottle holder make sure to drink lots of water before and after you ride. And if you do, make sure to keep it full before each long journey (and clean it out every once in a while too. You don’t know what can grow in there after a few weeks).

So go to the bike accessories store and start shopping. Your bike deserves a treat. Why not make it something you can both enjoy?

bike suppliesI ride my bike every day. It’s different than most other bikes because it has a flip-flop hub. These allow me to switch between a fixed gear and a freewheel option, or two different sized gear ratios. If I want to switch all I do is take the bike wheel off with my trusty bike supplies and flip (flop) it around. Put it back on and ba-bam! You have a fixed-gear. Or a freewheel, depending on your mood and the kind of riding you’re doing.

Why would I do this? Well, in part, for the added challenge. In another part, because I want to ride fixed on longer rides with less traffic, and free on inner-city commutes when I don’t want to worry about stop-skidding into a car.

So, as result I carry my bike supplies in a fanny pack, which has experienced a major resurgence in popularity over the past few years, although it still has a way to go to return to the dominance it reached during the early ’90s. This and my Onguard bicycle lock I wear and I’m prepared for different kinds of terrain, as well as hitching my bike up to whatever my Onguard bicycle lock fits around.

Don't do this.

Bike laws are important to follow. As biking gains in popularity in cities across the nation, police are becoming more strict with bikers who bend the law. Running reds is a big no-no, and can be enforced with a large ticket. The same traffic laws that apply for cars are now being applied to bikes, giving bikers more esteem among pedestrians, but making them more liable to infracting the law.

Some less serious, but equally ticketable, offenses include biking on the sidewalk, going against traffic, and not wearing a helmet.

Since bikers are being taken more seriously by the police, it is important to be taken more seriously by cars, too. Bikes are still beneath cars on the hierarchy of transportation, but there is a fine line between sharing the road and biking defensively. Don’t allow cars to cut you off, and make it clear that your area of the road should not be infringed upon. Eye contact is a good method for doing this. Bike supplies such as an LED light can help here, too.

Other bike supplies are important to keeping your bike safe. An Onguard bicycle lock is a good way to store your bike on the streets. There are lots of responsibilities bikers have, but with those responsibilities come a new found respect, and greater safety while on the road.

bike suppliesOne of my friends recently told me she never learned how to ride a bike. After a few minutes of joking and demeaning her, I began to truly feel bad for the poor girl. She never had that childhood feeling akin to jumping out of the nest and learning to fly.

Me, I’m a pro. I just built a new single speed bike with a flip-flop hub, so that I’m able to ride fixed when I’m in the mood to play around and turn tricks, and freewheel when I’m going on important expeditions. All it takes is turning the wheel around with my bike supplies, a.k.a. wrench.

So I told her I’d teach her to ride. I figured it would at least give me good practice for when I have kids of my own and I have to teach them. I sat her on the bike, which I’d turned freewheel so it would be easier. I ran alongside her and told her to keep her balance. She was shaky at first but pretty soon she looked like she had it and I let her go. She was coasting – a natural. I could’ve given her heart rate monitors to track her because she was going so fast. She pedaled back to me and said, that’s it? Let’s go shopping for a bike and some bike supplies.

bike suppliesCertain days were meant for bike riding. The poor unfortunate souls without bikes walk like the dinosaurs in Fantasia meeting their end, stomp, stomp until they want to collapse on their daily errand route, while we, survivors of the apocalypse, get to ride our bikes around town.

My friend recently bought a new bike. It has thick wheels, is all black and is generally pretty intimidating. The handlebars are shortened and it has a pedal-back brake. He uses an Onguard bicycle lock but he could probably just let it lean on its kickstand and people would back away from it, assuming contact with it could cause an electric shock.

There’s something about riding that bike, devoid of bike accessories, without even proper handle grips, around on a beautiful spring day. It may be like riding a Cadillac with its top down. You aren’t going for speed; it’s a joy ride. Relaxation and purity. You see the neighborhood, the trees and nature, and you also see the bike’s soul. You pedal quickly in high gear so it looks like the kind of bike you ride for the sake of riding, not necessarily to get anywhere. That’s the kind of bike to ride on the days meant for riding.

Heart Rate Monitors for Health

bike suppliesI recently went to the doctor and he said that it’s time for me to exercise at least three times a week. You are hypertensive and I’m worried about your cholesterol, he said. So I got worried too.

I work long days. Sometimes 12 hours. That leaves me little time to exercise. So I thought what can I do…Bike! I’ll bike to work a few days out of the week. I live in Manhattan, in the Upper East Side, so biking to Midtown is just a couple of miles. I already have a bike, what I’ll do is get one of those heart rate monitors.

So after my first week, I tracked my heart rate and it frequently went above 180. I showed up to work very sweaty. Biking is hard, I realized. It took about a month to get to where my legs weren’t sore any more. And with my new diet, I started to lose weight – 6 pounds.

Now I’ve been doing it for three months already and my heart rate rarely goes over 150 according to my heart rate monitors. I’ve lost 11 pounds and I feel better, I have more energy. I’ve begun to love biking and I’m going shopping this weekend for some new bike supplies. It’s a great way to stay fit and get around.

Bike Supply For May

Posted by DanielA in BikeAhead - (Comments Off)

bike supplyIt’s really easy to feel good when you’re biking in the springtime. This was the weather bikes were made for:  the slight breeze, the green tree leaves, light clouds burning off in the emerging sun, and you’re pedaling away looking up and around. It almost makes you want to sing. And you totally can, because you’ve been inspired by the birds and all the people who may think you’re weird you will probably never see again since you’re cruising along at twenty miles an hour and they are walking. Ha!

But be careful not to stay too high in the clouds. Biking is a lot like driving. You have to be aware. Because if a car doesn’t see you while you’re singing you could easily need a few new bike accessories or even worse, the money for a trip to the hospital. Cycling accessories like tail lights are a good idea because it doesn’t have to be dark for them to work. A bell is another one of those good bicycle accessories, especially if you’re biking in a high foot-traffic area.

So enjoy the beautiful biking months, but don’t get too lost in the pleasure of cruising. Bike safety is important too.

Zen and the Art of Bike Maintenance

Posted by DanielA in BikeAhead - (Comments Off)

BIKE suppliesWhen you get a flat tire, you may find yourself swearing and stomping your feet. Don’t. These things happen – they are the product of life’s roller coaster ride. You may be cruising along having a great day when you hear that whining hiss and tell yourself that your day is ruined. But actually, fixing a flat with your bike supplies is a beautiful thing. It allows you to become closer to your bike, to learn how to treat and care for it, and ultimately, to keep it in great shape.

I prefer to use the handle of a butter knife rather than a plastic pryer to remove the wheel from the rim. Plastic can break and isn’t as hardy. If you’re patching your tire, take your time, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth and pretty soon you will have vulcanized that wheel. The key is to have all of your bike supplies on hand. Even if you don’t have a pump you can walk to the nearest gas station, which may be far, but remember that you are able to walk – you are alive! – and you will feel a little better. Keeping all of the other bike accessories on hand, in a pouch or bag, is a good idea.

Bike maintenance is like practicing zen. So whenever you need to fix your bike, breathe easy and enjoy it.
