Bike Supply For May

Posted by DanielA in BikeAhead - (Comments Off)

bike supplyIt’s really easy to feel good when you’re biking in the springtime. This was the weather bikes were made for:  the slight breeze, the green tree leaves, light clouds burning off in the emerging sun, and you’re pedaling away looking up and around. It almost makes you want to sing. And you totally can, because you’ve been inspired by the birds and all the people who may think you’re weird you will probably never see again since you’re cruising along at twenty miles an hour and they are walking. Ha!

But be careful not to stay too high in the clouds. Biking is a lot like driving. You have to be aware. Because if a car doesn’t see you while you’re singing you could easily need a few new bike accessories or even worse, the money for a trip to the hospital. Cycling accessories like tail lights are a good idea because it doesn’t have to be dark for them to work. A bell is another one of those good bicycle accessories, especially if you’re biking in a high foot-traffic area.

So enjoy the beautiful biking months, but don’t get too lost in the pleasure of cruising. Bike safety is important too.

Zen and the Art of Bike Maintenance

BIKE suppliesWhen you get a flat tire, you may find yourself swearing and stomping your feet. Don’t. These things happen – they are the product of life’s roller coaster ride. You may be cruising along having a great day when you hear that whining hiss and tell yourself that your day is ruined. But actually, fixing a flat with your bike supplies is a beautiful thing. It allows you to become closer to your bike, to learn how to treat and care for it, and ultimately, to keep it in great shape.

I prefer to use the handle of a butter knife rather than a plastic pryer to remove the wheel from the rim. Plastic can break and isn’t as hardy. If you’re patching your tire, take your time, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth and pretty soon you will have vulcanized that wheel. The key is to have all of your bike supplies on hand. Even if you don’t have a pump you can walk to the nearest gas station, which may be far, but remember that you are able to walk – you are alive! – and you will feel a little better. Keeping all of the other bike accessories on hand, in a pouch or bag, is a good idea.

Bike maintenance is like practicing zen. So whenever you need to fix your bike, breathe easy and enjoy it.

Cycling Computers and New Maxes

cycling computersI love riding my bike. When you’re pedaling in the lowest gear, powering up a medium sized hill and you get to the top and see a row of green lights stretch to the bottom and you hope that none become yellow, there is bliss as your sweat dries in your armpits and across your brow and your hair flaps.

When I was a boy, I had a great bike. Cycling computers were just some of the bicycle accessories I had along with water bottle holders and hydraulic shocks. I tracked my average speed, my distances, and my maximum speed. When I went down the biggest neighborhood hill, I remember the joy of getting the new max up to a new record – 26.2 miles per hour. I remember being satisfied with that. If you rounded up, I went 30, which was faster than any human could run.

My cycling computers made my bike one of the coolest bikes in the neighborhood. My dad even tied off little pieces of cloth and placed them on the wheel axle so that they stayed clean. Those bike accessories you can make.

Today my childhood bike is a little small for me, I think. Although who knows, maybe if I go into my garage and adjust the seat, I can take it down one of the big hills and get a new max.

New Bike Supplies for the Summer

bike suppliesI ride my bike hard. About 70 miles per week. And after more than a year of wear and tear, my baby needed some love. I was getting ready to take her into the shop when on the way I had a couple of broken spokes. I felt guilty for making her squeak like that.

When I pedaled the sweaty two miles to the bike shop, I told them that I needed a tune up (long overdue) as well as some new rims for my whip. They were very helpful and said, okay, we’ll need a day to fix it up with new bike supplies because we’re pretty busy at this time of year. I said fine.

The next day  when I went to pick her up they told me that the crank was bent. I had been used to it for so long on my twisted bike that it didn’t seem too bad. But when I pedaled with new rims and the rest of it all cleaned up, I could really feel the problem. I decided to invest in some new bike accessories.

Now my baby is all fixed up. It’s like riding a new bike! I’m all set for the summer.
